Generalized Expansion Factor of an Orifice for Subsonic and Supercritical Flows

Abstract

General expressions are developed which approximate the expansion factor of any orifice in any installation for both subsonic and supercritical flows. These factors are based on a presumed knowledge of the incompressible contraction coefficient for the same orifice. Comparisons are made between the suggested approximations and: ASME empirical expansion factors; previous experimental studies; and new experimental work.
