Some Factors Influencing the Contact Behavior of Surfaces

The contact behavior of metal surfaces has been studied by determining the normal approach of two contacting surfaces subjected to a normal load. By considering certain contact situations, the effects of such factors as the mode of asperity deformation, the population of asperities and their orientation over the surface have been examined. It has been demonstrated that the contact behavior is significantly influenced by these factors and that certain modifications should be introduced to the relevant theoretical treatment.
